About the Department
In a world in which information moves at the speed of light and age-old centers of media domination are being toppled by new ideas, technologies and movements, students in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Utah State University are prepared to wage words.
Our students are broadcasters, public relations specialists, writers, editors, strategic communicators, news designers, agricultural communicators, photographers, radio reporters and broadcast technicians - and that's long before they graduate. At Utah State University, journalism and communication students learn by applying their growing skills in a diverse array of academic and experiential settings.
JCOM students write about issues of local interest and importance; help regional businesses establish positive public images; work on public service campaigns to encourage healthy behaviors; investigate government corruption; report on athletic, artistic and civic events; capture moments that help tell the diverse stories of their communities for television, radio and internet broadcast; and travel around the world to tell stories that have the power to change our lives. In doing so, they've become some of the most awarded student journalists in the western United States and secured careers at television stations, public relations agencies, non-profit organizations, social media companies, newspapers, magazines, websites and public radio stations across the nation.
Our faculty members are veteran journalists, experienced public relations professionals and - most importantly - amazing teachers. They demand much from their students and give even more in return. Every member of our instructional team is ready and willing to offer both educational and professional mentorship, helping connect students to internships, lead international reporting expeditions, facilitate extracurricular learning opportunities, and advise students as they put developing skills into real-world practice.
Yes, the world of professional communication is quickly changing. In Utah State University's Department of Journalism and Communication, we're fostering professionals who expect, embrace and exploit those changes to make a positive impact in the world.
We prepare students to be skillful and ethical communicators, scholars, and consumers in a media-driven world.
